Subject: Keeping more than one Eurasier
Posting, August 15, 2004
I recently discussed the subject of keeping more than one Eurasier with somebody and found the posting of Annemarie in the German part of our forum very helpful in that context. I thought it is worth sharing, as are so many other postings and discussions in the German part and I hope to translate more of them as soon as my time allows:
Translation of posting from Annemarie on May 28, 2004:
"Hello, from my long experience in observing many constellations of keeping Eurasiers, I come to the following conclusions:
1. Grown up dog + puppy is basically always easier than a grown up dog + grown up dog
2. Male + female is easier than keeping two of the same sex
3. Male + male is easier than female + not related female, although, there have been two males (they had to be separated) who had serious fights and did not settle their fights through working out their rank
4. Female + not related female always need a very ! experienced owner, even when the 2. female enters the home as a puppy
5. Female + daughter usually works well, exceptions - especially when the mother turns old - are known and can occur.
Conclusion :
Whoever wants to keep 2 or more dogs, should have information about the above mentioned and should also have exceptionally good ! knowledge of dog behaviour in dog packs. Because it is the alpha human, who influences and initiates the relationships in the pack to a high degree through his actions or non-actions. a. "
End of quotation and translation.
Please note:
When discussing this topic, there is something else to consider as well: If there is no medical or other pressing reason, we prefer to keep Eurasiers in the ZG "entire", meaning not spayed or castrated. This is especially important in this context, because a hormonal change such as a season or heat, pregnancy, birth, rearing puppies, etc. is often the time, in which difficulties between females CAN be triggered.
