Eurasier Information and a Brief Introduction to the World of Eurasiers
| 1 | What are
Eurasiers?
|
Eurasiers were created in 1960 by crossing Wolfspitz females with Chow-Chow males, with the objective to achieve a very special family dog. The first results were called "Wolf-Chows". Later, the breed was "completed" with the Sibirian Samoyed. The breed was recognized as the "Eurasier" by the German Kennel Club VDH / FCI in 1973. Eurasiers often have a blue or blue-spotted tongue.
| 2 | What are the
characteristic traits of Eurasiers?
|
Eurasiers are self-assured, calm, even tempered dogs in which the best qualities of their foundation breeds have been combined. They are alert (Wolfspitz), without being barkers. They show a dignified reserve (Chow-Chow), but without being timid. Towards their family, to which they need a constant close contact, they are lovable and friendly (Samoyed) companions. For the full development of theses qualities, Eurasiers - just like other dogs - need a knowledgeable, understanding and consistent training. In no way are Eurasiers suited to be kept in a kennel or chained up.

What is so special about the Zuchtgemeinschaft?
|
The Zuchtgemeinschaft
fuer Eurasier e.V. (VDH/FCI) developed from the foundation kennel "vom
Jaegerhof" and is committed to the original ideas of Eurasier
breeding: to breed healthy Eurasiers of stable temperament and of typical
character. Characteristic for the Zuchtgemeinschaft are a centrally
controlled and computer-assisted breeding programme, with demanding
requirements for the assessment and breeding permit of Eurasiers,
intensive care and advice for their breeders and an open-minded and
friendly care of their members.
Commercial breeders are not tolerated by the ZG. |

| 4 | Where can I
meet Eurasiers to get a personal impression of this breed?
|
Dog and owner must form a good team and
therefore we welcome a personal contact with people interested in ZG
Eurasiers.
We offer Eurasier-Meetings and Eurasier-Walks, to which you are welcome to come. Additionally, our puppy placement support (Mrs Maike Ley, Tel: ++49 - (0)4721 - 714559) might be able to give you an address in your region. |

| 5 | Do Eurasiers
need a lot of exercise and walks?
|
While Eurasiers need a close contact to their family and want to be where their family (their "pack") is, this does not mean that Eurasiers are lapdogs and content with a mere walk up and down in front of their home. Fully grown Eurasiers need exercise, at least 2 to 3 times a day (totalling approx. 2 hours), and they like walks out in nature as well as contact with other dogs. Eurasiers learn easily and are happy for every little task you can give them. Eurasiers also have great fun doing sports together with their humans, such as agility. Eurasiers love variety, they do NOT like repeating the same exercises over and over again.
| 6 | Do Eurasiers
fit into a family with children?
|
ZG Eurasier puppies are raised in close contact with their breeder family and are therefore "imprinted" to humans from the beginning. Actually, one cannot say of any dog or breed that it is friendly to children by nature; this is a behaviour that should be developed ("imprinted") in close contact with the human family and their children. This also applies to Eurasiers. They will quickly develop a close bond to their new "family pack", if raised accordingly. Child and dog must learn to understand and respect each other (i.e. a child must learn to never disturb a sleeping dog, a young dog must learn that the child is higher in the family rank of hierarchy, etc.). Children should never be left without supervision with an animal (no matter which breed). For more information please feel free to email. |
|
| 7 | Do Eurasiers
need a lot of grooming and care?
|
Although Eurasiers have a long coat and thick underwool, this does not mean they need a lot of grooming. Brushing and combing will take out dirt and assist Eurasiers in their natural drive to keep themselves clean. A wet Eurasier should be dried with a towel. Once a week, brushing and combing should be done more intensively. Twice a year, Eurasiers shed their underwool; during this phase, daily brushing helps and can even speed up the shedding process.
| 8 | Can Eurasiers
be trained as guard dogs?
|
Eurasiers are NOT suited to be trained as
Guard Dogs. Eurasiers are confident, calm and even tempered companion dogs with a high resistance against any provocation. They are alert and attentive, without being barkers. Willing to learn and interested in new tasks, Eurasiers need an understanding and consistent training to find their place in their family. They will then live up to the natural duty of a dog: to stand by their family. |
|
| 9 | How can I
obtain a Eurasier?
|
The Zuchtgemeinschaft exercises puppy placement support for breeders and people interested in Eurasiers: Maike Ley Nordheimstr. 2 27476 Cuxhaven Germany Tel. ++49 - (0)4721-714559 welpenvermittlung.zg@eurasier-online.de Mrs Ley will answer all your questions concerning Eurasiers and she can also send you additional information. She knows of every litter that is born within the ZG and she can recommend a puppy to you, which you would pick up from the breeder when it is nine weeks old. (see also Puppy-ABC) |
|
| 10 | What does a
Eurasier cost?
|
Let's be honest, such
a little darling can actually not be paid with money.
The Zuchtgemeinschaft recommends the following puppy price to their breeders: 1000 Euro (all inclusive) (This price includes the puppy = 730 Euro, + 70 Euro for the first vaccination and the microchip, + 200 Euro as an "x-ray deposit"). The 200 Euro deposit for the x-ray is refunded to the owner as soon as the Eurasier is about 18 months old and has been examined by a veterinarian according to regulations of the ZG (hip dysplasia, patella luxation, eye diseases, etc.). These results must be turned in to the ZG in an evaluable state. This information builds the basis for a sound breeding programme. (further Information in English as soon as possible) |
Please beware when you read offers of "Eurasiers" in newspapers, magazines or other media. In Germany, if you cannot find the symbol "VDH" (for the German Kennel Club), somebody is trying to sell you a Eurasier-mongrel or one of those Eurasiers that originate from non-controlled breeders. Often enough these non-controlled breeders are rather careless concerning the mating (all kinds of other dogs than Eurasiers have been used!), and the care of the dam and sire as well as the rearing of the puppies. The behaviour of such so-called "Eurasiers" originating from non-controlled breeders outside the VDH has little or nothing in common with the unique behaviour of a true pedigree Eurasier bred within the VDH.
We hope this introduction to the World of ZG Eurasiers gave you a first impression. You will find a lot more and indepth information on the website of the Zuchtgemeinschaft fuer Eurasier e.V. - please see Sitemap.
